Neediest Student Fund Established
Divider

The MTC Foundation has secured more than $430,000 in pledges over the next five years to help the college's neediest students. This fall, the first $500 grants were awarded to students who were identified by the college's Office of Student Financial Services as the college's neediest students. These funds help to reduce the financial burden placed on lower-income students when faced with the cost of pursuing a post-secondary education.

Contributions for the Foundation's Neediest Student Fund came from local businesses, MTC faculty and staff, and donations made in memory of former MTC Commissioner Harriet Gardin Fields.

"The college and Foundation recognized a need to assist the college's neediest students," said Tom Schlictman, MTC Director of Development. “Many of the college's students just miss the low-income threshold level to qualify for federal Pell grants, which would cover their tuition, but still need a financial boost to attend college."

The grants are awarded in the Fall and Spring semesters. Contributions to this important fund can be made by using the Click and Contribute button and specifying the Neediest Student Fund.

Bank of America and Wachovia are supporting the Quick Jobs program at MTC, enabling the MTC Foundation to award $50,000 in scholarship aid to individuals in the community. Quick Jobs is an MTC Continuing Education program that prepares participants for high-demand occupations in local industries such as skilled crafts and health care. It will also help increase the basic skill levels necessary to participate in local economic development opportunities.

"Helping people attain the skills they need to find employment quickly is an important part of the college's mission," said MTC President Marshall (Sonny) White, Jr.

The average earning potential for all MTC Quick Jobs programs is $16 an hour, with many programs having average earning potentials over $25 an hour, according to wage estimates from the South Carolina Employment Security Commission. For more information about MTC's Quick Jobs programs, visit www.mtctraining.com/QuickJobs.htm or call 803-732-0432.
